While visiting Italy, I had the rare opportunity to step inside a 500-year-old apothecary hidden within a church in Trastevere, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Rome.
It was unforgettable.
The room was filled with old bottles, herbs, drawers, and vessels that once held healing preparations. I remember smelling one of the containers and being surprised that after hundreds of years, it still carried the scent of eucalyptus. I could almost imagine the monks quietly blending herbs, oils, and remedies by hand, creating custom preparations for the people who came to them for care.
That visit stayed with me.
My spa career has always been surrounded by essential oils, botanical extracts, and the art of blending. Today, most people call it aromatherapy, but to me, it has always been more than a pleasant scent. Aromatherapy is the use of natural aromatic substances from plants to support the body, the senses, and the overall treatment experience.
